My grandfather’s century of life was defined by service – to his country and Commonwealth, to his wife and Queen, and to our family. I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days. I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her. I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour! My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation. Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead. I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job. 📷 Photograph taken by The Duchess of Cambridge

💙 To the medical staff, porters, cleaners, volunteers, pharmacists, administrators and all those working across the NHS — thank you for everything that you do. Since the start of this year, The Duke has spoken to more than 300 staff and volunteers spanning the breadth of the NHS’s workforce, from all corners of the UK 🇬🇧 via a series of one-to-one phone calls 📞 and participation in regional meetings via video calls 🖥️. The Duke was keen to hear about the impact the pandemic has had on the wellbeing of staff and volunteers across all parts of the NHS and to pay tribute to the NHS’s incredible efforts over the past year. Through these conversations, The Duke has also heard from staff about how funding from @nhscharitiestogether has allowed hospitals across the nation to meet the immediate needs of staff, supported community partnerships, and bolstered the nation’s long-term recovery from the pandemic.

When we look back at the COVID-19 pandemic in decades to come, we will think of the challenges we all faced – the loved ones we lost, the extended isolation from our families and friends and the strain placed on our key workers. But we will also remember the positives: the incredible acts of kindness, the helpers and heroes who emerged from all walks of life, and how together we adapted to a new normal. Through Hold Still, I wanted to use the power of photography to create a lasting record of what we were all experiencing – to capture individuals’ stories and document significant moments for families and communities as we lived through the pandemic. Since March, Westminster Abbey has been providing up to two thousand life-saving jabs each week to local Westminster residents. Today The Duke and Duchess heard from staff about their experiences of being involved in the largest ever UK vaccination programme, and of working out of such an iconic venue, and also met and spoke with a number of people receiving their vaccine that day. Run by Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the vaccination centre operates from the south transept, home to the world-famous Poets’ Corner. The Abbey continues to remain open for a daily Holy Communion service. Today also marks the one year anniversary since the first lockdown in the UK — the National

🏥 For nursing students across the UK, studying and undertaking placements during the pandemic has been a challenge like no other. The Duke and Duchess spoke with Abigail, a first-year Adult Nursing student at @UlsterUni about her video diary 🎥 created to demonstrate a typical shift during her first placement as a student nurse. Abigail told The Duke and Duchess about some of the challenges she had faced, including the emotional impact of patients being unable to receive visits from their families. She also spoke about her experience of starting university during a pandemic, and the impact that COVID-19 has had on her ability to socialise and learn with fellow students in person due to lockdown restrictions and a subsequent increase in online learning. Take a look in our Stories 📱 to see more as The Duke and Duchess spoke to @UlsterUni staff and students, where they heard about the students’ appreciation for the invaluable experiences they have gained working on the frontline, and the support they received from the university during this challenging period.
